The Westernielandstermaar or shortly Nielandstermaar is only in the north of the province of Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen. It starts from the Pieterbuurstermaar at the Fraelemaheerd farm and flows from there east eastern direction along the farms Huninga and Zijlbrugge to the former location of the Hiddingezijl at Westernieland, where until the 1980s there was a crowd. Beyond this place, the Westernielandstermaar crosses into the Oude Riet, which passes into the Noordpolder in the Noordpolderkanaal. In the course of time, it has only been channeled in many places for the tour.
Through the Pieterbuurstermaar, the Hoornse Vaart and the Kromme Raken, the Westernielandstermaar is connected to the Reitdiep. It is thought that the Westernielandstermaar is a remnant of the Hunze's old walk because the last part of hiding in Hunsingo took place here in 1350.
