Prometheus (publisher)

Publisher Prometheus is a Dutch publishing company, consisting of the funds Prometheus, Bert Bakker and Ooievaar, and is based in Amsterdam.

Prometheus was founded in 1989 by Mai Spijkers and has both Dutch and foreign authors in her fund. Under the name of Bert Bakker, history books are published, but the Notendop series was published by Uitgeverij Bert Bakker.

History Bert Bakker

Bert Bakker publisher was founded after the Second World War by the author and publisher Bert Bakker. The authors belonged to Martinus Nijhoff and Gerrit Achterberg. In 1969, Baker's cousin Bert Bakker became publisher. Under his leadership, in the seventies, publisher Contact was taken over, the publisher of, among others, the journal Anne Frank. Contact was rejected in 1984 and handed over to departing editor-in-chief Harko Keijzer. His successor at Bert Bakker became Mai Spijkers, who succeeded in purchasing Il nome della rosa (1980) from Umberto Eco, whose Dutch translation appeared in 1986. Ook Spijkers left Bert Bakker in 1989 to start his own publishing house Prometheus.

Bert Bakker became part of the Kluwer group in the seventies. In 1989 the publishing house became completely independent. Contradictory sales claimed ownership of Bakker's company in 1992 at the Meulenhoff Group. There, the publishing house was not much later transformed into imprint, housed at Prometheus.

Under the impression, Bert Bakker is still showing quality non-fiction books. Prometheus

Prometheus was founded in 1989 by Mai Spijkers, who brought together several authors from Bert Bakker, including Herman Brusselmans. The publishing company was established within the group that had renamed René Malherbe from a number of dismissed book divisions of major media companies. In 1991, Malherbe sold his book group, including Prometheus to the Meulenhoff Group, later PCM General Books. The first great success became the laws of Connie Palmen. Spijkers made a living in the Dutch publishing world by providing first major advances to writers to connect them to their publishing house, even if they were in the fund of another publishing house. In 2001, PCM also released Vassallucci, which soon lost its independence and was accommodated at Prometheus.

In 2007, publisher Prometheus, including Bert Bakker, was taken over by founder Spijkers.
