Southern part of the sea wall, at the Harlingersteiger The Staverse Gate
The Zeemuur is a masonry wall in the Dutch town of Enkhuizen, forming the watercourse for the eastern part of the city center.
The wall was built in 1608 on a lower dike dating back to 1567, having both a seaworthy and a defensive function. The dike on which the wall of the sea is located, has been like a wierdijk like most parts of the West Frisian Omringdijk. In 1615, the Staverse Gate was made in the navy wall, at the current Compagniestraat, which has traditionally been the only passage in the wall. The gate was in decline, but was rebuilt in 1833.
Over the centuries, the sea wall has been damaged several times by storms, the last time in the 1916 watershed. The Staverse Gate was also damaged. The navy is still a primary watering tower, owned by the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. grades 52° 42′ 5″ NB, 5° 17′ 48″ OL
