The Bislama (also Bichelamar) is a Creole language spoken in English and French in Vanuatu State. The name originates from the Portuguese bicho de mar (sea cucumber). That expression came in English as pseudo-french bêche de mer, which later became French in the French language as biche la mar. Later, not only was the sea cucumber mentioned, but also the language in which the trade was conducted in sea cucumbers: Bislama.
The language is spoken by about 200,000 people.
