Erotomanie

Erotomania is a form of malnutrition. In this psychiatric condition, someone imagines that another is in love with him or her, cherishes romantic feelings or opens up for romantic approaches, while in reality there is no question. In most cases, there is a high (re) social status (the boss, a movie star, a politician, a doctor, etc.). The condition is traditionally referred to as Clérambault's syndrome, to the French psychiatrist Gaëtan Gatian de Clérambault (1872-1934).

Although sexual fantasies can occur, the delusion is usually idealized romantic and spiritual in nature. In many cases, the person actually searches through phone calls, letters or stalks.

Initially, the patient trusts that a loving relationship will arise. If the object of love is already married or has a relationship, this relationship is considered to be unloving and unsuccessful. If the patient becomes aware of the fact that there will be no relationship, he or she will often be disappointed and angry, sometimes even revengeful. Sometimes the patient projects this anger on the object of love and is afraid to become the victim of revenge actions. This can in turn lead to fear or paranoia.

Erotomania is most commonly observed in women in clinical conditions, but men tend to act on their ideas. This can cause problems with police and justice. Trivia
