Cresolo

Structures

The cresols are phenols characterized by the presence of a methyl substituent. There are three isomeric forms, which differ in the mutual position between the methyl group and the hydroxyl group. Having all of the three isomeric forms a melting temperature close to room temperature can be present either in the form of solids or in the form of liquids: ortho-cresol appears in the form of yellow-brown crystals, meta-cresol appears as dense and viscous liquid, while para-cresol is a tough-looking solid. The mixture of the three isomers is sometimes called tricresol.
