In 1977, Scithers became the first editor of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. He won Hugo's best editor in 1978 and 1980 for his work at Asimov's. In 1982 he went to Amazing Stories and edited that magazine until 1986. After that, he worked with John Gregory Betancourt and Darrell Schweitzer in the re-creation of the fantasy and horror magazine Weird Tales. From the re-launch in 1988, they performed the editorial board in different combinations.
