Lesser Poland (history)

Lesser Poland 1635 in red Poland-Lithuania 1660

In Poland, Lesser Poland included a larger area than the present-day region of Lesser Poland.

In 1569, Poland and Lithuania joined the Union of Lublin into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This empire was subdivided into Great Poland, Lesser Poland, Lithuania and the Duchy of Lijfland, each of which was divided into wilderness and / or princes.

The table below shows the areas belonging to Lesser Poland (Małopolska). In addition, with all the Ukrainian territories, Lesser Poland was larger than Greater Poland. Several Polish parts, such as Lublin and Podlachia, now form an independent Polish region, next to the (really small) contemporary small Poland.
