Michiel van Musscher

Michiel van Musscher (1643-1705)

Michiel van Musscher (Rotterdam 1645 - Amsterdam June 20, 1705) was a well-known Dutch painter and engraver of portraits and genres. He was in the doctrine of Martin Saagmolen, Abraham van den Temple, Gabriël Metsu and Adriaen van Ostade. In 1660 he settled in Amsterdam. At the beginning of his career, he focused on genes. The first portrait assignments he received from his own baptismal circle. From 1670 he received his first assignments from rich merchants and regents, including Johannes Hudde and Van Loon (family). Van Musscher's work is characterized by a stunning display of details, such as oriental carpets, whose buttons are countable.

Works of his hand are in Museum Van Loon, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in 's-Gravenhage and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

A first overview of his works was opened in Museum Van Loon on March 9, 2012.
