The term drop-in (from the English small stop) identifies a type of low threshold structure designed to accommodate adults in difficulty. Drop-outs are usually targeted at drug addicts, as part of the harm reduction policies, but in recent years some have begun to welcome people who do not have addiction or substance abuse problems but are still in a state of severe discomfort (without residence, illegal migrants, refugees). Drop-in concepts can change depending on the different conceptions of reducing damage: they can be simple places where the exchange of syringes and the distribution of sterile material are directed exclusively to addicts; they can be opened to a wider user, especially by serving as a trucking place from the street where people can respond to basic needs such as bathing, dressing, drinking something hot or just resting; still, they can play a "first contact" role for people in difficulty, who can start to get in touch with more specific services (Ser., social services, dormitories).
