Story

The attraction does not really have an official story. However, the following story is most often told and considered generally accepted.

In Phantom Manor, the story is told of Henry Ravenswood (1795), a man who became a brick richer by the mining industry in the town of Thunder Mesa. Of all the gold he found in Big Thunder Mountain, he built Ravenswood Manor, a Victorian country house on top of Boot Hill, just across from Big Thunder Mountain. He founded a family with his wife Martha (1805) and received a daughter named Melanie (1842).

A local Indians tribe, driven by the inhabitants of the village of Thunder Mesa, said that Thunderbird was deep in Big Thunder Mountain. Thunderbird would be a powerful Indian god that protected Big Thunder Mountain. According to legend, Dondervogel could save thunder, lightning and earthquakes as he strikes his wings. But Henry Ravenswood did not believe those stories. The time passed and the gold in Big Thunder Mountain slowly slowed, so the miners went deeper into gold. Melanie changed from a young girl into an adult woman and ran a train engineer against the body. They engaged and the train mechanic promised Melanie to travel with her ever far away from Thunder Mesa, to great envy of Henry trying to stop the wedding. But his plans ran out of nothing when, in 1860, the miners of Big Thunder Mountain received the thunder of Thunderbird and Big Thunder Mountain was simultaneously hit by thunder, lightning and an earthquake. The catastrophe costed life to Henry Ravenswood and his wife and family were no longer heard until the truth came from the rubble after a long time.

The only ones who survived the earthquake were Melanie and her fiancé. Their wedding day had come and promised to be a special day. But nothing seemed less true. A ghost, called "Phantom" appeared before the house. He approached the next groom and drove him to the attic. The groom could have stayed better because, before he knew, he hung a strap that was attached to one of the beams. Meanwhile Melanie waited for hours in the ballroom. She remained alone with the housekeepers and butlers. She made herself aware that he would still show up. That's why she kept her wedding dress forever and her bouquet. In order to be prepared for the return of her groom, she sang a melody of lost love.

Phantom was still wandering through the house and laughed at Melanie to shame on her. He invited his friends from the underworld to celebrate forever in the ghost villa. The shape of the house was slowly changed by the evil forces entering the house. Years passed and all corners of the house were filled with cobwebs and dust. The rumor was that Melanie had lost her mind. She walked through the house year-on-year and still sang the same song for her next while ghosting her and demons danced. Everywhere she walked she was reminded of the wedding. The house was slowly surrounded by weeds and dead plants. Melanie always hoped her loved one would ever come back and never thought why he would have left.

The mess of the earthquake caused the old Thunder Mesa to turn into a ghost town. Due to its appearance, it was nicknamed "Phantom Canyon". The dark version of the city was never inhabited by other people, and the old inhabitants have never returned.
