Kosterij (Ferwerd)

The Kosterij at the Kerw in Ferwerd

The Kosterij in the Frisian town of Ferwerd is a monumental building on the Kerkpad 4, formerly used as the home of the local costume schoolmaster. History

The Kosterij is a property dating from the early 19th century. Stenvert calls 1799 as a year of construction. According to Van Dijk, the rear of the house is older, that part of the house dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. In this back part of the house, the costumer fired the turves for the stoves in the church. In the right-hand side are ancient medieval Frisian mops processed. The Kosterij was also called the School House. That had to do with the dual function of the costumer, which combined this function with that of the schoolmaster. The house has served as a teacher's residence until the construction of the new public school. From one of those schoolmasters, Ritske Clewits (1812-1894), the name was scratched in one of the windows. The head of the school was then living in a mansion on the Marrumerweg. The Kosterij received private residents from then on.

The Kosterij is recognized as a national monument. 53° 20′ 21″ NB, 5° 49′ 28″ OL
