In most languages, the plural is an important exponent of the grammatical category number. The form of a word in the plural can be seen to be more than one copy of the intended.
In Dutch there is singularity and pluralism; the latter is especially recognizable by verbs, nouns and pronouns.
Other languages can realize the category number differently. In some languages, the plural does not exist. Other languages distinguish separate paradigmatic word forms for singular, dual (dualis) and plural, and sometimes for triplicate, quadruple, etc. Also see WikiWoordenboek
