Vim washing powder

Vim is the name of a grain powder brand introduced in 1904 by Lever Brothers (William and James) on the English market. The name is derived from the English word vim, which means fut or energy.

The powder wrapped in a cardboard cylindrical bush with straw holes on the top became a great success and soon it was also sold in other countries, including in the Netherlands since 1921. The group has now grown to Unilever. Originally, this modern and practical powder was also recommended as a cleaner for automobiles and windows. From 1926 it was recommended for household purposes only. Especially when grinding dishes and pans, Vim came true.

In the late 1960s of the 20th century (1971 in the Netherlands), the liquid abrasive Jif was released, which was renamed in CIF in 2001.

A slogan of Vim was: Vim foam and can not scratch, but the silicate used for sanding did not work completely scratch-free. In the liquid abrasive this was replaced by the softer calcite.

This development made the classic brand Vim disappear from the European market in 2004. In some parts of the world, the liquid agent Cif is still sold under the brand name Vim.

The brand Vim is currently owned by multinational Spotless Group SAS. Products under the brand name Vim have been introduced in the Netherlands by Spottles Benelux (formerly Citin Home Care Products).
