A track is the name in radar jargon for a goal whose position, course and speed are unambiguously determined.

A track is an abstract collection of data. A traffic controller usually speaks of a track when he means an image of an airplane or ship on his radar screen. In transcendental terms, he often means the plane or ship himself. A radar software programmer speaks of a track when it means the complete set of data of a target present in a system. This is generally much more than the stated position, course and speed. For example, altitude (for aircraft), identity, destination, place of departure, load, estimated time of arrival, etc. may be part of the data set called track.

The minimum amount of data to be able to speak about a track is generally the said combination position / rate / speed. When one or more radar echoes are captured, but these three data can not be determined unambiguously, they often speak of a plot.
