Jan Hemelrijk (Arnhem, May 28, 1918 - March 16, 2005) was a Dutch resistance warrior and statistician. During World War II, Hemelrijk was involved in counterfeiting personal certificates and distribution vouchers. He acted as a leading member of the successful PP group. After that, he continued his studies mathematics and graduated on December 13, 1950 at Van Dantzig with the dissertation entitled: Symmetry Tests and other applications of Neyman and Pearson's theory.
He became an employee at Van Dantzig at the Mathematical Center and later Head of Consultation of the Statistical Department. From 1952 until 1960 he was a professor at Delft University of Technology and then retired at the University of Amsterdam, as successor to Van Dantzig. Hemelrijk was chairman of the Association for Statistics and Operational Research (VVS) and editor in chief of the magazine: Statistica. He also provided the first television course Statistics of Teleac, which was broadcast in the 1969s and 1970s.
