Jan Meursing (Eext, 24 August 1782 - Westdorp, 4 March 1856) was a Dutch farmer, vervener, municipality receiver and glass manufacturer. Life and work
Meursing was born in 1782 in Anloo as son of Jakob Meursing and Aaltje Homan. Meursing was not only a farmer, but he also owned peat bogs in the peat area in the east of the province of Drenthe. He was also a municipal recipient of the municipality of Borger. Together with the glass-blower Johann Georg Christoph Heinz and the furnace maker and potter Georg Frederik Mulder, Meursing founded a new glass factory in 1844. The Drentse landowner and vervener Gerrit Kniphorst was also involved as a silent partner in this initiative. Until then, Heinz and Mulder were employees at the first glass factory in Nieuw-Buinen, founded by Jan Freseman Viëtor and Johann Christian Anton Thöne from Winschoten. In 1845 his son Jacob Meursing became the first director of the new glass factory. Both glass factories of Thöne and van Meursing became leading companies in the second half of the nineteenth century in the peat colonial part of the province of Drenthe.
Meursing married Borger with Roelfien Heeling on 23 November 1815. She died in February 1817. Meursing remarried on 16 May 1822 in Borger with Jantje Dilling. Meursing died in March 1856 at the age of 73 in Westdorp. His granddaughter Jantina Arendina Meursing together with her husband Harm Maarsingh built the monumental villa Huize Ter Marse in Stadskanaal.
