libitina

Libitina was the goddess of death and funerals in the Roman world. She is often treated as Venus (Venus Libitina) or Persephone. In her temple the necessities for the funeral were sold and the death registers were kept. Libitinarii, funeral entrepreneurs, borrowed their name from her and found at her temple.

Her name is (in the Oden of Horace) a synonym for death. It is thought that one of the Colosseum gates was named for her in honor of the lost gladiators. Although her name is often found in Roman poetry, she seems to be little portrayed and sacrifices to her were relatively rare. She is usually represented as a black-shrouded form that had risen above a dying gliding until the time of death.
