Phospho-ester bond


The phospho-ester linkage is a chemical bond between a phosphate (acidic) and an alcohol in a process called esterification, where a water molecule is eliminated.

H3PO4 + ROH → H2PO4R + H2O

For example, the binding in ATP between alpha phosphate and ribose carbon 5 'is a phospho-ester bond. This type of bond (called low energy) differs from the phospho-anhydride (high-energy) bond between alpha / beta and beta / gamma phosphates in the ATP. Another example we find in the intermediate of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate glycolysis (1-3-BPG) which contains two phosphoric bonds, but with different hydrolysis energy, a phospho-anhydride on carbon 1, and a phospho-ester on carbon 3 .
