Sound sheet

The soundtrack of a clover bumblebee

An audio sheet or sound board, also sound base, enhances vibration in an instrument. For many stringed instruments (eg clover, violin, guitar, harp, piano), the vibrations of the string are passed through a comb to the sound board, usually made of wood.

In a relatively closed system like a violin, top and bottom sound boards form part of the sound box.

In a piano or wing, the sound board is composed of a large resonant surface, which allows the air to vibrate over a large surface.

The function of a sound sheet or board is thus to capture the vibration of the string, and then bring the air column over the blade. The string itself can hardly cause the air to vibrate, but as the energy is delivered to the sound sheet, the vibration energy is spread over a large material surface, causing the air to vibrate.

Material, shape and curvature and tension of the sound sheet affect the timbre (the tone).

More generally, any relatively hard surface can act as a sound board to a lesser or greater extent, for example when placing a tuning fork against a table top, the tabletop becomes the sound board. Also see Trivia
