Slovenske železnice (SŽ) (Slovenian railways) is Slovenia's national state railway company. The company was founded in 1991. The base was formed by the Ljubljana branch of the Jugoslovenske železnice.

History

The first track in Slovenia opened for train traffic was part of the Südliche Staatbahn of the then Donaumonarchy. The aim was to connect between the capital Vienna and the main port city of Trieste. The first part in Slovenia was the connection between Graz and Maribor, opened in 1844. On June 2, 1846, the railway line was opened between Šentilj and Celje, one of the oldest trajectories of the European mainland. In 1849 the track was extended to Ljubljana via Zidani Most. Only in 1857 was Trieste reached, with a double-track railway line via Postojna, Pivka and Divača. Network

The current network of Slovenian railways covers 1288 kilometers, of which 506 kilometers are electrified. In addition, 331 kilometers are double track. In Slovenia, the trains run at 3 kV dc, unlike in neighboring Croatia, where 25 kV alternating voltage is used. Therefore, cross-border cross-border trains to Zagreb must change locally in Dobova.
