Theater Center

Theater Center was a theater company from the Netherlands.

The company was founded in 1960 and arose from the theater group Puck founded in 1950 by director and actor Egbert van Paridon. At the initial location of Haarlem, no own theater was available. That's why the company moved to Amsterdam in 1975, where it became the regular actor and owner of the Bellevue Theater at Leidsekade. The adjoining theater cafe was named after a local ban on the Center's then unbelievable performance of Plautus' comedy De Smoeshaan (1969).

Theater Center was especially famous for its performances of modern English theater, with first-class Dutch premiers of, for example, the work of Harold Pinter (The Birthday Party, 1962, A Little Pain, 1963 Home, 1967) by Edward Bond (Gered, 1968 ) and Joe Orton (Love Sloane).

Center also positioned itself as a fervent advocate of performing original Dutch pieces, such as: Ajax-Fijenoord (1969), and Kees de Jongen, (to Theo Thijssen) by Gerben Hellinga (1970), Hugo's Request Claus (1981), The Cool Lakes Des Doods (To Frederik van Eeden) (1976) and Strong Drink in Oud Zuid of Ton Vorstenbosch (1983), Kutzwagers by Wim T. Schippers and Junkie Sorrow of René Seegers, Leon de Winter , Jean van de Velde (1981).

Walter Kous and Peter Oosthoek were among the faculty directors. The work of the dramatists Hans Roduin and Carel Alphenaar greatly influenced the repertoire.

In 1987, the company merged with the Public Theater to the new company Amsterdam's Toneelgroep.
