De Krang

The Krang is a nature reserve directly southwest of Swartbroek. It is in possession of Nature Monuments and has an area of 301 ha.

It consists of a core area: Roukespeel and Laagbroek. These are both peel fins: low-lying bowls in the middle of the higher area. These bowls are separated by a deck sandrug on which Swartbroek and the Castert neighborhood are located, which places are connected by the Pelmersheideweg.

There are also a number of scattered parts, including the Kootspeel, the Secretarial Forest, a somewhat drier forest on a higher part, and the Vogelbosje directly east of Weert, which was purchased in 1916 because there was a large scale kranskarwij occurred. However, this rare plant disappeared in the course of the 40's of the 20th century. Against Swartbroek is a small estate estate that has some older oaks.

The nature reserve is located between the Leukerbeek in the north and the Tungelroyse Brook in the south, although there are also some areas on the other side of the streams. Smaller streams are: Leegbroek, Noodbeek, Dijkerpeel and Theurkeslossing. These are landscaped water courses, while the Leukerbeek is channeled. As a result, the natural torment was caught and the water level dropped. Construction of dams has restored the water level.

The area consists of forest and arable land. A large part of the area is wet, so that elzenhakhout and elzenbroekbos grow. Although the area has been previously dewatered, it is nowadays that water levels are re-established.

There are foliage and coniferous forests, but also grassland and ancient fields. There are pools where alpine alamander and Kamsalamander thrive. Water and oil pipes indicate that water quality is good. Large witch weeds also grow in the area. There are also walks off and there is a bird watching screen.
