Fruela I

Fruela I (722 - 768), was the eldest son of Alfons I of Asturias.

He followed his father as a duke of Cantabria and King of Asturias from 757 to 768 and continued his father's work.

Fruela, who received the Wrath as a nickname, oppressed a revolt of the Basques, chessing Munia of Álava, a noble family of women, whom he later married. She gave him a son, the later King Alfons II de Reine.

During his reign, the city of Oviedo was founded. This happened on November 25, 761, when Abt Máximo and his uncle Fromestano founded a church in honor of Saint Vincentius. The good relationships between the church and the later Asturian kings were continued.

Fruela did not know the happy end of his reign. After killing his brother Vimerano, the nobles became restless. To make it a little good, he named Vimerano's son to his successor. A plot was blamed against him and he was killed in Cangas de Onís. His cousin Aurelius became throne successor.

Fruela and his wife Munia are buried in the Oviedo Cathedral.

According to legend, he would also have had a daughter Jimena, who is placed as the mother of legendary medieval novel hero Bernardo del Carpio.
