Mathilde of Limburg Stirum

Mathilde van Limburg Stirum about 1880 Anna Mathilda (Mattie) Countess of Limburg Stirum (Warmond, July 24, 1854 - Popham (England), May 14, 1932) has become known as a lover of Crown Prince Willem, the oldest son of King William III. Her name for her neighbor was Mattie. Permission for marriage with the Prince was personally abstained by the king.

Mathilde was a daughter of the second marriage of Leopold Count of Limburg Stirum (1818-1900), Mr. van Noordwijkerhout, with Julie Marie Barre (1822-1887). Her father was a grandson of the famous Leopold of Limburg Stirum (1758-1840), a member of the Driemanschap who was responsible for the foundation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Leopold had already five children from an earlier marriage with Adolphine Wilhelmina Anna van der Wyck (1819-1849).

Mathilde and the Prince of Orange learned to know each other in 1873. In the spring of 1874 the prince tried to get permission from his parents and the government for a marriage, but both King Willem III and Queen Sophie held a marriage of the throne successor with a royal princess. The government also supported this view, but De Vries and Fransen van de Putte ministers wanted to cooperate when they realized that the prince would not conclude another marriage. The 33-year-old Willem still wanted to marry, if necessary without permission from his parents. Mathilde, who was not twenty, also did not get permission from her parents. The romance ended when Willem died in 1879.

Mathilde of Limburg Stirum eventually married William Charles Reginald of Tuyll van Serooskerken, Mr. van Coelhorst (1845-1903). They included the parents of Mayor Henri Charles of Tuyll of Seroos Churches (1884-1950).
