Milton Banana


Milton Banana, born as António de Souza, (Rio de Janeiro, April 23, 1935 - May 22, 1999) was a Brazilian percussionist and drummer who was active in the forest nova. He developed the bossa nova drum style and worked a lot with João Gilberto.

Banana was a car actor and played in the 1950s all kinds of dance bands, including those of Djalma Ferreira. In 1956 he became a member of the trio of Luis Eça, who played in a club that was important for the bossa nova, Plaza. In 1959 he was the drummer on the plate Chega de Saudade of João Gilberto (with arrangements of Tom Jobim). In 1962 he played next to and with other musicians on the Encontro show, Gilberto went to Argentina for performances in a club and played at a bossa nova concert in Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1963 he drummed the very successful album of Stan Getz and Gilberto. He made a tour of some European landena and formed a trio in his home country, with which he recorded many records for Odeon and RCA in the years. In 1977 he played in João Donato's Fogueira3 group.
