Pierre Pidoux (Neuchâtel, 4 March 1905 - Geneva, 16 July 2001) was a Swiss theologian, organist and musicologist.
LifeThe father of Pidoux was a Protestant minister, from Switzerland, but active in Belgium. Because of World War I, Pidoux was sent to Switzerland and grew up in Neûchatel. He studied theology in Lausanne at the Eglise Libre and became a pastor in Winterthur. After a visit to Glasgow he decided to study organ at the conservatory of Geneva. He founded the Choeur J.S. Bach in Lausanne, where he was also organist (until 1948). In 1948 he became organist in the Protestant church of Montreux, where he also settled. Between 1946 and 1965 he taught hymnology at the Theological faculty in Lausanne; in 1964 he received an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty. Work
Pierre Pidoux specialized in hymnology and musicology. Although he has published a lot of old music at Bärenreiter (Gabrieli, Frescobaldi, Merulo, Kaufmann), he has become best known as a specialist in the history of Huguenot Psalter. His magnum opus is the two-part edition of the lyrics and melodies of that Psalter: Le psautier huguenot du XVIe siècle, i: Les melodies; ii: Documents et bibliographie (Basel, 1962). Pidoux also worked hard for Protestant church music (organ, choir, and congregational singing). He was co-publisher of Collection de Musique Protestante (from 1935) and Cantate Domino. He was closely involved with the editors and published the new hymnbook of the French-speaking Protestant Church of Switzerland (1976). In 1967 he co-edited the publication of the complete work of Claude Goudimel. Sources Externe link
