Richard Aoki

Richard Aoki

Richard Aoki (San Leandro, November 20, 1938 - Berkeley, March 15, 2009) was an American human rights activist. He was one of the first members of the Black Panther Party and brought it to field marshal.

Together with his family, was locked in the Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah from 1942 to 1945. After the Second World War, the family moved to Oakland.

Aoki worked for the US Army for eight years. He studied at Merritt College for two years and became friends with Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. One month after he went to the University of California, Berkeley to study sociology, Newton and Seale founded the Black Panther Party.

Although the Black Panther Party counts several Asian Americans among its members, Aoki was the only one who formally held a leadership role.
