The Balloon d'Or 2001 was the 46th edition of the football prize organized by the French magazine France Football. The prize was won by Englishman Michael Owen (Liverpool). The jury was composed of 51 journalists who were affiliated with the following UEFA associations: Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Croatia, Slovenia , Slovakia, Estonia, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Wales, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta , Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Turkey and Yugoslavia.

Each jury chose the best five players in Europe from a shortlist of fifty players. The player in the first place got five points, the second choice four points and so on. That way 765 points were divided, 255 points was the maximum number of points a player could achieve (in the case of a fifty-one stubborn jury). Result
