Chester Burleigh Watts


Chester Burleigh Watts (Winchester, Indiana, October 27, 1889 - July 17, 1971) was an American astronomer. biography

Watts studied astronomy at the University of Indiana. In 1911 he joined the United States Naval Observatory (USNO), but temporarily returned to Indiana to study again and gained the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1914. At the USNO he worked in the Six-Inch Transit Circle Division.

With a short break from 1915 to 1919, when he worked in the Time Service Division, he continued his entire career with the Six-Inch Transit Circle Division. In 1934 he became director of this department, which he would continue to lead for 25 years.

In the 40's, he dedicated himself to the time-consuming task of mapping the edge of the Moon, that is, all manifestations of the Moon that are the result of libration. His research was based on 700 images of the Moon taken between 1927 and 1956. The results of this study were published in Part 17 of the Astronomical Papers of the American Emphemeris.

Retired in 1959, but continued to work for a few years.
