Alois Senefelder

Alois Senefelder (Prague, November 6, 1771 - Munich, February 26, 1834) was a Bavarian graphic artist and actor, but he is first known as the inventor of the stone print or lithograph (1796).

In 1818 he published his book Volts Lehrbuch der Steindruckery, describing his failures and successes during the search for his invention. The book also contains recipes and clues for aspirant crushers. In 1819 an English and French version followed and in 1824 a shortened edition in Italian.

A Dutch translation by H.C.O. Nail of the book is: The essence of the stone print by Alois Senefelder, edition: Vereeniging Amsterdamsche Grafische School, 1929, Amsterdam.

In the Dutch Valkenswaard, the Dutch Steendrukmuseum explores the discovery of lithography and stone pressures and the social importance of the invention of Alois Senefelder. For example, an exact replica of his first printing press can be seen. Also the National Museum of the Playing Card in Turnhout, Belgium shows a number of beautiful press presses. Externe link
