Jianchangopterus

Jianchangopterus zhaoianus is a basic pterosaurian who lived in the middle of Jura during the current China.

The species was named and described in 2011 by Lü Junchang and Bo Xue. The gender name refers to the Jiangchang basin with a gelatinized ancient pteron, "wing". The designation owes Zhao Xijin.

The fossil, holotype YKH-0931, was found in the west of Liaoning province at Linglongta in a layer of Tiaojishan formation dating from Callovien, about 163 million years old. It consists of a fairly complete skeleton that is partially connected to a plate and counterplate. It is part of the collection of the Yizhou Fossil & amp; Geology Park.

The descriptors were able to identify some distinctive features. The upper jaw carries seven and the lower jaw six teeth for a total of twenty six. The jaw edge is straight and straight between the teeth. The upper jaw bone shows the beginning of a cavity. The symphysis, frontal growth, of the lower jaws has a striking ledge in the longitudinal direction. The fourth paw of the wing finger has a strong curved shaft and its length is 96% of the first paw.

Jianchangopterus is a very small species. The holotype has a wing span of about thirty-two centimeters. The skull is forty-three millimeters long and is relatively oblong and flat with a slightly hollow upper profile and large fenestrial antorbitalis. The teeth in front of the head are slightly curved and fairly narrow. At the front they point something forward, middle and backwards slightly backwards. The teeth in the muzzle run through to the muzzle. The neck is quite long, the middle and hind legs short. The foot shows a small fifth toe with an inclined curved end. The tail is long, candlelight and stiff.

Jianchangopterus has been placed by the descriptors in the Rhamphorhynchidae and inside again in the Scaphognathinae. The species looks strong on Sordes.
