Multicolor Graphics Array

Multi-Color Graphics Array of MCGA is a default display mode that IBM introduced in 1987 to the IBM PS / 2 Model 25, where it was placed on the mainboard.

In that same year, the VGA adapter, which also purchased the MCGA mode, came. With this, the MCGA disappeared as an independent standard and became part of the VGA adapter. The MCGA was used only for the IBM PS / 2 Model 25 and Model 30 (both integrated on the mainboard). Never created a separate video card for MCGA.

The MCGA mode was especially popular with games because there were 256 colors in the resolution of 320 × 200 pixels (from a 262,144 color palette). The MCGA also had a higher resolution of 640 × 480 pixels, but only monochrome (without colors). MCGA also enabled all CGA modes, but not the EGA mode.
