The UNI CEI EN 16231: 2012 standard is the standard that defines the "Energy Efficiency Benchmarking Methodology". The standard defines the requirements and provides recommendations on the benchmarking methodology of energy efficiency. The purpose of benchmarking is to identify key data and indicators of energy consumption. Indicators can be both technical and behavioral, qualitative and quantitative, and must be targeted at performance comparison. Benchmarking can be either internal (relative to a particular organization) or external (between organizations). The standard aims to provide clear criteria for defining the boundaries of the object being analyzed, with for example to structures, activities, processes, products, services and organizations. It also provides guidelines on the criteria to be used to choose the appropriate levels of detail for the collection of information, for their elaboration and review in accordance with the objectives of the analysis itself. On the contrary, the standard does not provide specific performance requirements for energy use. For all activities related to continuous improvement processes, however, should be made to the organization management systems, such as UNI CEI EN ISO 50001: 2011.
