Anna Lindh


Anna Lindh (Stockholm, June 19, 1957 - September 11, 2003) was a Swedish politician. She was Minister of the Environment from 1994 to 1998 and Secretary of State from 1998 until her death. She was married to Swedish politician Bo Holmberg (1942-2010).

Lindh studied rights in Uppsala. She was already active politically during her studies. In 1982 she acquired a seat in parliament, and in 1991 she became a member of the Social Democratic Party.

Lindh has set up the campaign for introducing the euro in Sweden. The referendum on this took place on Sunday, November 13, 2003, resulting in a "no" of the population against the introduction of the euro in Sweden.

The shock that Sweden died with her is being compared to those after the murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986.

On 7 May 2004, in Dublin, EU foreign ministers, eight Arab countries, Israel and Turkey decided to name a new foundation for Anna Lindh. The aim of the foundation is to establish a dialogue for a better understanding between Europe, the countries around the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
