Bob Hunter

Robert Lorne Hunter (October 13, 1941 - May 2, 2005) was a Canadian journalist and activist. He was also co-founder and the first president of Greenpeace.

Bob Hunter was a reporter since the sixties linked to newspapers in Winnipeg and Toronto. He focused on cultural and environmental issues.

In 1969, he was one of the founders of the Do not make a wave committee, targeting American nuclear bombs in the North Sea. In 1971 an expedition was undertaken with an purchased old ship, which was renamed "Greenpeace" for the occasion.

In 1972 Hunter, Paul Watson and Patrick Moore founded the organization Greenpeace, of which Hunter became the first president. The goal was to end the pursuit of whales and seals and nuclear activities in the oceans and seas of the world through peaceful actions.

Hunter pushed the communication form of Greenpeace, which quickly grew the organization. He chose himself later for less violent actions and he supported the new organization Sea Shepherd, from his friend Watson. After Hunter died of prostate cancer, Watson named one of Sea Shepherd's ships the 'Robert Hunter'.
