Phoslock

Phoslock is a modified clay product containing metal lanthanum. Lanthaan binds phosphate into the water, causing it to fall to the bottom, covering the sediment. Because Phoslock can be used to bind the algal blooming promoter, the agent can be used to fight blue algae.

The Phoslock drug was developed by the Australian government institute CSIRO, and it has also been applied in Australia. Phoslock in the Netherlands was presented at the Aquatech 2006 fair.

The 6-acre water area of camping The Green Island in Appeltern is the first Dutch water where the drug has been tried. The 11 ton Phoslock that was added to the water had to fight the blue algae in the bathing water. The test in Appeltern has been successful, but in the Netherlands one is reluctant to add chemicals to surface water and thus also with this agent. Also see Externe link grades
