Regent (diamond)

The Regent

The Regent is a 140.64 carat diamond. This was found in 1698 by a slave in a mine near Golkonda (India). The slave hoped to get rich and clog the still rough diamond into a wound in his leg. The slave, however, would be robbed and killed himself. In 1701 Thomas Pitt bought a diamond from a Madras dealer. For this reason, the diamond is also called the Pitt Diamond.

The stone came in 1717, via the French gemstone dealer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, in the hands of Philip of Orléans. The diamond was later worn by King Louis XV of France and then held by Marie Antoinette. During the French Revolution, this was held by Napoleon Bonaparte.

Today the Regent is in the Louvre.
