Sagallo

Flag of Sagallo Sagallo or Sagallou (Russian: Сагалло) is a Djibouti resort on the northern coast of the Gulf of Tagiura. It has reached historical notoriety since it was the only Russian attempt to establish a colony in Africa.

Between 1875 and 1884 the site was occupied by Egyptians, who built a fortress. Paul Soleillet acquired Sagallo from the Société Française d'Obock and the Golfe Persique as a starting point for in-car caravans.

In January 1889, Russian Nikolai Aschinow (also transcribed Ashinov, Achinov or Achinoff) and Paisi Monk, with about 200 people - including priests, women and children - occupied the abandoned fortress. His goal was to create a colony, the "New Moscow" on the Tagiura Gulf, near the Suez Canal route. This should be the starting point for a Russian presence in Africa. French and indigenous people accuse Russians of raiding caravans, while Italian newspapers accuse France of supporting Russian business to block Italy's ambitions.

France saw the presence of Russians as a violation of their territorial rights and sent two cannons. The Russian government took the distance from Aschinow, not to compromise its relations with France. On February 17, 1889, French warships appeared in front of Sagallo. The Russians were bombed and died, the others were sent back to Russia. Aschinow was imprisoned for a few months by the Russian government. The Russian expansion dream in Africa ended in less than a year. Bandieramify wikitesto
