Jacopo Peri

Jacopo Peri

Jacopo Peri (Rome, August 20, 1561 - Florence, August 12, 1633) was an Italian composer.

Jacopo Peri was next to composer singer and harpist. He studied in Florence near Malvezzi. Around 1588 he went to work at the Medici's court, where he acquired the nickname Il Zazzerino because of his long golden lures. As a member of the Bardi camerata, he was closely involved in the developments in the music that led to the opera. He was the first to process the stile rapresentativo in a complete dramatic work. His work Dafne is known as the first opera. The libretto is taken by Ottavio Rinuccini. The successor Euridice is the oldest work that has been completely preserved. It was composed on the occasion of the marriage of King Henry IV of France with Maria de 'Medici in 1600. Again, Rinuccini's libretto was again. Peri wrote another opera: Adone, and smaller work in collaboration with Marco Da Gagliano, Lo Sposalizio di Medoro e Angelica and Flora.
