The Wilhelminafontein on the Noorderiland in Rotterdam
In Rotterdam, on the Noorderiland on the Burgemeester Hoffmanplein is a Wilhelminafontein. The monument was placed in 1898 on the occasion of the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina. It is a design by Prof. Henri Evers, the architect of the Rotterdam City Hall. The statues on the monument are handed by Simon Miedema, who also designed the images for the White House in Rotterdam. The monument itself is a column on which a torch-bearing angel stands. On the plaque can be read: Tribute to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands at Hare Throne.
The fountain was removed at the beginning of the 1990s, after the roots of the chestnut plant probably planted in 1898 had caused tears in the monument. Also, the monument was prevalent to vandalism. Through the use of the residents' organization Noorderiland and with the support of the district of Feijenoord and the association of Rotterdam, the image could be restored. It was once again placed on the burg one hundred years after Wilhelmina's inauguration. Hoffmanplein. 51° 54′ 50″ NB, 4° 29′ 44″ OL
