Location of Boothia Gulf

The Boothia Gulf (Gulf of Boothia) is a large inlet of the Arctic glacial sea at the coast of northern Canada.

It is bordered to the east by the island of Baffin and the Melville peninsula, south of the Nunavut coast, west of the Boothia peninsula and Somerset island and north communicates with the Lancaster Strait through the Prince Regent Inlet. In the central eastern area through the Strait of Fury and Hecla, the gulf communicates with the Foxe basin. To the west via the Bellot Strait it communicates with Franklin Strait and Peel Sound. At the coast, the gulf is articulated in several bays. Near the coast of Baffin Island, the gulf communicates with the Bernier and Agu bays. Along the coast of the peninsula of Melville it communicates with the bay of Garry. South communicates with the Bays of Committee and Pelly and near the coast of the Somerset Island with the Creswell Bay. There are several islands among them, the main ones being the Crown Prince Frederick Island and Harrison Island. In the Bay of the Committee stands the Wales Island.

The Gulf was named in honor of British entrepreneur Felix Booth who funded John Ross's exploration trip (1829-33) seeking northwest passage Notemodify wikitesto
