Jamaican dollar

The dollar is the currency of Jamaica. One dollar is one hundred cent.

The following coins are used: 25 and 50 cents and 1, 5, 10 and 20 dollars. The paper money is available in 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5,000 dollars.

For the 19th century Spanish silver dollars and gold coins were used, but also Portuguese gold Joe's and French coins. The first coins in Jamaica in the time of the British West Indies were introduced in 1822. In the 19th century, English pounds, American dollars and Canadian coins also circulated. From 1830 to 1941 Jamaican pounds were used (JMP). The British West Indies Dollar (XBWD) became legal tender in 1951, but was not widely used. In 1969 the Jamaican pound was replaced by the Jamaican dollar in a ratio of 1: 2.
