Baltic and International Maritime Council

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) is a non-governmental organization with headquarters in the Danish Bagsværd, a suburb of Copenhagen. Founded in 1905, BIMCO is the largest international shipowner association in the world and represents shipowners and cargo owners. All in all, the organization represents about 65 percent of the global tonne size. In other words, for 65 percent of all goods (expressed in tonnes) transported by ship, stakeholders are represented by BIMCO. Activities Facilitatie Representation Mistake Origin

In the late Middle Ages, Europe experienced an explosive growth of shipping. However, limited communication capabilities allowed each country, sometimes even every port, to use its own documents. Charter parties became more complex and more and more clauses were added to the contracts, resulting in endless discussions about the formalities of each agreement. Under the impetus of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the BIMCO designed a series of standardized documents. In the beginning these were mainly charter parties, but later all of the other shipping-related documents were uniformed. Today, this is still the main business of BIMCO. Externe link
