Tibor de Machula


Tibor de Machula (Kolozsvár, June 30, 1912 - Abcoude, December 18, 1982) was a Hungarian cellist who lived and worked in the Netherlands.

He studied cello at Adolf Schiffer in Budapest. When he was 12, he debuted as a soloist at the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. Then he made a tour through Italy. As a 15-year-old, he was invited to study further at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (USA) at Felix Salmond.

After three years in America, he returned to Europe. He made tours including, inter alia, South Africa, Scandinavia and then Dutch-India.

In 1936 he was asked by conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler to become the first soloist of the Berlin Philharmonic, where he stayed for 11 years. From 1947 until his retirement in 1977 he was the first soloist of the Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam. In addition to his orchestra career, De Machula was active in various chamber music ensembles (such as the Concertgebouwstrijkkwartet with Jan Damen, Jan Bresser and Klaas Boon) and as a soloist.
