Wakisaka originally served under Akechi Mitsuhide, a vase of Oda Nobunaga. In 1581, he was one of the leaders of the Nobunaga troops at the siege of Hijiyama. The year after, Akechi betrayed Oda Nobunaga and took off his power and land, but he was defeated two weeks later in the Battle of Yamazaki.
Wakisaka joined the winner, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had become powerful as a vazal of Oda Nobunaga. Wakisaka fought among others for Hideyoshi in the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, which earned him fame as one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake, along with Kato Kiyomasa and others. He received the glory of Awaji, worth 30,000 koku in 1585. He led part of Hideyoshi's fleet to the Korean campaign.
In 1600 Wakisaka first wished to join Tokugawa Ieyasu, but decided to resist him and join Ishida Mitsunari. On October 21, somewhere during the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, Wakisaka passed to the enemy together with Kobayakawa Hideaki. He defeated the forces of Otani Yoshitsugu, thus contributing to the victory of Tokugawa.
After the battle, Tokugawa allowed the Wakisaka to retain its domain on Awaji.
In later years, he expanded his area with another glory, in Ozu, in the province of Iyo, with an income of 53,000 koku. After his death, he was succeeded as head of the family by his son, Wakisaka Yasumoto.
