The property originally served as a warehouse for the West Indies Company (WIC) warehouse in Amsterdam. On the ground floor, hides were stored and pressed, which were transported to Amsterdam from trading stations like New Amsterdam (New York, New York).

Between 1647 and 1674, the property served as the headquarters of the WIC. From this property the commanders were responsible for all trading activities, including trade in gold, sugar and slaves. From 1647, they were also formally responsible for the reunion and sailing of New Amsterdam until the settlement was taken in 1664 by the English and was named New York.
