Joseph Teixeira de Mattos

Joseph Teixeira de Mattos (Amsterdam, July 29, 1892 - Paris, June 22, 1971) was a Dutch artist and art painter, a cousin of the Jewish artist family Teixeira de Mattos. biography

He was the eldest of the two sons of Jacob Teixeira de Mattos and Abigael Lopes Cardozo. He called himself autodidact but got support from painter and graphic artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1870-1944) and his cousin, the sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa (1863-1939), both Portuguese-Jewish artists.

In 1923, he married Susanna Charlotte Rodrigues, whom he divorced in 1929. During this marriage they lived in Zandvoort and later in The Hague. In March 1935 he married the Danish Ellen Hansen and in 1938 the couple moved to Paris, where he died in 1971. Teixeira de Mattos is buried on the Cimetière du Montparnasse. Work

Joseph Teixeira de Mattos initially recorded many self-portraits, including his brother and parents, portrayed several times. He also drew many cityscapes, but his great predilection led to the drawing of animals. Regularly, therefore, he visited Artis to make his models as natural as possible. In 1927 he became a member of the artist association De Brug and in 1934 also of the Independents and Arti et Amicitiae. In this way he came into contact with colleagues more and could also bring his work better.

A large part of his work belongs to the permanent collection of the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
