Oswald von Nell-Breuning (Trier, March 8, 1890 - Frankfurt, 21 August 1991) was a German Jesuit, theologian, philosopher and economist. He acts as a nestor of the social doctrine of the Catholic Church.

In 1911, Von Nell-Breuning joined the Jesuits and began his novice in 's-Heerenberg. He studied his study philosophy in the same year in Limburg Valkenburg. After the study, he served in a lazaret during the First World War from 1915 to 1916. Between 1916 and 1919 he studied pastoral theology in the Austrian Feldkirch and in Innsbruck.

Ten years after his arrival with the Jesuits, he was dedicated to the priest. Since its study time, the economy and social relationship in society have been of interest. In Münster he graduated from the stock market morale. Shortly afterwards, in 1928, he became professor of moral theology, canonical law and social sciences at the Philosophical Theological University in Frankfurt.

Von Nell-Breuning has become known as a nestor of Catholic social doctrine. He stamped on the encyclopedia Quadragesimo Anno published in 1931 by Pope Pius XI, which was intended to follow the encyclopedia Rerum Novarum from 1891. In the Netherlands he had contact with General Henri Poels, who performed his work in the industrializing Limburg mining region. In the 1920s, when Von Nell stayed in Düsseldorf, he participated in the discussions in the Augustine Association, a society of South Limburg clergy who examined and discussed the consequences of industrialization, immigration and secularization.

As a result of the ever-advancing attitude of Oswald von Nell, the National Socialists made him a public and prohibition ban since 1936. After the war, he exercised great influence on discussions about trade unionism, employee participation and other social issues. He did this within the Christian Democratic CDU as well as within the Social Democratic SPD.

His bibliography includes more than 1800 publications. Until his hundredth birthday, he added himself to it.

Von Nell-Breuning became an honorary citizen of his native town of Trier and of Frankfurt. Trier will award a prize (10,000 euros) to someone of great merit in the field of social engagement. There are also streets and schools named in Germany.
