Said van Egypte


Mohammed Said Pasha (Arabic: محمد سعيد باشا) (Cairo, March 17, 1822 - Alexandria, January 17, 1863) was wāli of Egypt.

Said Pasja was a son of Mohammed Ali Pasja, the founder of modern Egypt. When uncle Abbas I Hilni was killed on July 13, 1854, he succeeded him as a hereditary governor of Egypt on behalf of the Osan Empire sultan.

Immediately after his appointment, he had to decide on the plan of French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps to dig a canal from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. He granted a license for the channel, which he would no longer experience. For this project, Said founded Port Said in 1859.
